IV Therapy FAQs

Intravenous (IV) therapy - also known as infusion therapy - is a medical technique that inserts fluids, medications, vitamins, and nutrients directly into a person's bloodstream through a vein. This type of therapy can provide a wide range of benefits to those who require a boost of energy, immunity, and/or overall health.

IV therapies have the potential to help improve a person's health. These therapies can be highly personalized based on a patient's specific needs and goals and have a wide range of benefits. It can help provide relief from fatigue, boost energy levels, promote faster recovery, and improve mental clarity. It can also help to reduce the effects of stress, improve immunity, and help to fight and/or protect against illnesses. IV Therapy can also be used to improve skin health, treat dehydration (including hangovers), improve nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and much more.

IV therapy works by administering a solution of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into the bloodstream. For some individuals, IV administration allows for better absorption and utilization than oral administration, particularly those with autoimmune, endocrine, metabolic or gastrointestinal conditions that affect nutrient absorption.

During IV therapy at MindStream, you will relax in a comfortable chair. An experienced clinician will then carefully place an IV line into your vein, typically at the crux of the elbow or the top of the hand. With an experienced IV provider, inserting the IV will be virtually painless, and once it is in, it will be comfortable enough that you may even forget it is there. We will then begin the infusion of a personalized blend of fluids, vitamins, and nutrients. You won't feel the infusion as it's happening and you should be able to sit back and relax for its duration, approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Following treatment, we will remove the IV, which involves simply sliding the needle out and is painless. You will then be free to go. The treatment requires little to no downtime.

IV therapies are generally safe. There can be occasional discomfort (starting an IV, for instance), feelings of lightheadedness, or nausea. We review all of the potential side effects of our IV therapies prior to administration to give people an opportunity to understand this deeply before proceeding. We recommend a screening consultation if you have medical conditions, take a lot of supplements, or would like to make some curated decisions about your approach prior to starting.

IV therapies have different effects based on the reason you are receiving it. For simple hydration, this may last a day or 2. If you have micronutrient depletion, the effects can last much longer. We can also work with you to identify additional ways to support your health through nutrition and supplementation.

At MindStream, your health and safety are our top priority. Our infusion therapy mixtures are personalized and often complex. We also think it is best not to guess, since symptoms of deficiency and toxicity can be similar. Therefore, we typically recommend a 30-minute medical consultation prior to treatment for most patients, especially for those who answer "yes" to one or more of the following questions:

  • Are you currently taking one or more vitamins and/or supplements? Yes/No
  • Are you currently taking one or more regularly prescribed medications? Yes/No
  • Have you been diagnosed with one or more chronic illnesses? Yes/No

Although pre-treatment medical consultations help to ensure patient safety and satisfaction, they may not always be necessary and are, therefore, optional. Patients who already have an understanding of their needs and goals regarding IV therapy can move forward with scheduling an IV therapy appointment.

IV therapy at MindStream is provided in a comfortable setting, where you can either relax or work based on your needs. We have both individual and group treatment rooms based on availability. At the start of the session, our staff will place the IV and administer the selected therapy. We will monitor you for any side effects and then, following treatment, remove the IV and apply a bandage. For our therapies excluding ketamine, you are able to leave and drive or otherwise do anything you would normally do without any downtime.
