Dr. Susan Redmond, Family and Integrative Medicine Physician, recently joined the MindStream Integrative Medicine team, bringing with her exceptional knowledge and expertise. Meet Dr. Redmond and learn about her health philosophy, hobbies, and more in the following Q&A.
1. Why did you choose to go into medicine?
Growing up, one of my favorite books was ‘The Doctors Book of Home Remedies‘. I knew I wanted to care for people in some way at an early age (although at first, I dreamed of being a veterinarian).
2. Why did you choose to specialize in Family Medicine and Integrative Medicine?
It was a cascade of events while I was in college that really led me to this career. I was studying psychology at Clemson University when my Uncle John was diagnosed with terminal metastatic cancer. I was able to see him in the final weeks, meet his oncologist, and see the compassionate care of the hospice team who got him home, to die with dignity. It was then that I knew I wanted to be part of the healthcare team for patients and families.
I then had the opportunity to intern at an integrative cancer care center in Australia. There, I learned the importance of nutrition, physical activity, herbs/supplements, and other integrative therapies like acupuncture and reiki for overall health and wellness. Family medicine is the perfect way to support patients’ health over the course of their lives while incorporating integrative medicine.
3. Who or what was your greatest influence in medical school or residency?
In medical school, I was part of an amazing course called ‘The Healer’s Art’, designed by Rachel Naomi Remen, MD. My teacher was a remarkable family medicine doctor, Dr. Bob Gwyther at UNC. During that course, I learned about service, healing relationships, grief, reverence for life, and compassionate care – it really shaped me as a young physician.
4. What do you love most about your job?
I love getting to know people and their health journeys and creating space for healing. It is a true privilege to support patients’ health.
5. What is your philosophy of health?
I really resonate with “Whole Person Health”. Good health is truly a journey. I partner with patients to help identify what matters most to them and build a plan for their journey to whole health – caring for your body, mind, and spirit. Health is a team sport! It is amazing how resilient our brains and bodies are and there are a lot of ways to support health and wellness.
6. What is your best piece of health-related advice?
Move a little every day, eat whole foods when you can, and listen to your body/mind.
7. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and pets. We love games – board games, cornhole, bowling. I like to make time to be outside and active.
8. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I love marching bands! I played tuba in high school.
9. What do you like most about being part of MindStream?
Being part of this amazing team of inspiring women has really helped me grow as a physician and person!
10. What advice do you have for people looking for a new physician?
Find someone that you can connect with, Every doctor isn’t right for every person, and that’s ok.
